Port of Baltimore Handled Record Amount of Cargo in 2013

The port said it set a record for containers at its public terminals, moving 6.4 million tons, an increase of 1% from 2012. Automobile cargo increased 16% to 749,100 cars, the highest for any U.S. port.

The port handled 9.6 million tons of general cargo in 2013 at its public marine terminal, matching the prior year’s record.

Including the private marine terminals, the port had 30.3 million tons of international cargo cross it docks last year at an estimated value of $52.6 billion.

“The port has successfully withstood a challenging economy and has outperformed many other major U.S. ports thanks to shrewd infrastructure investments, unique job-creating public-private partnerships, and long-term contracts with major international shipping companies,” Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley (D) said in a statement.
