Lyttelton port staff to strike today

Workers from Christchurch’s ocean port want a four percent pay increase over the next 12 months, one percent more than offered by management.

Today’s is one of many strikes planned for the coming weeks, but the Lyttelton Port Company says there will be no impact on port operations.

The strike starts tonight wit the logistic officers, who are responsible for planning the movement of freight and cargo across the wharves, refusing to work from 11pm to 7am tomorrow.

The Rail and Maritime Transport Union says its members have been negotiating their pay since before Christmas. It says port management didn’t want to set a precedent for negotiations for a wider collective agreement which covers over 400 port workers.
