Green Marine Inspires More New Members

Founded in 2007 by the major marine industry associations in both Canada and the U.S., Green Marine has rapidly gained a reputation for credibility and transparency, and for challenging participant companies to improve their environmental performance beyond regulatory compliance.

The cornerstone of the Green Marine initiative is its far-reaching environmental program, which makes it possible for any marine company operating in Canada or the U.S. to voluntarily improve its environmental performance by undertaking concrete and measurable actions.

The new members and partners are:

1. Westshore Terminals operates the coal-exporting facilities at Roberts Bank, British Columbia, Canada with an annual capacity of 33-million tonnes. In the most comprehensive environmental management upgrade in its history, Westshore is spending $14 million to provide better dust suppression, better use of water, in-community air monitoring and other advances.

2. North Arm Transportation is involved in a wide range of marine industry activities but is primarily focused on the movement of fuel and freight to small communities and isolated locations along the coast of British Columbia. It also provides towing services and complete project support to some of the West Coast’s largest construction projects.

3. Suncor’s Montreal refinery is the cornerstone of its refining and commercial activities in the Eastern region of Canada. Sustainable development and environmental protection are at the heart of Suncor’s corporate vision. The Montreal refinery undergoes daily checks to ensure that it conforms to more than 200 regulatory requirements to maintain its operating license.

4. Pacific Coast Terminals is the link between ship and shore for Western Canadian resource companies and their global markets. Trains deliver sulfur and ethylene glycol from Alberta’s oil and gas refineries for shipment to ports around the world. The 43-hectare (108-acre) terminal has the flexibility to load these raw products directly onto ships or to temporarily store them on site.

5. The BC Wharf Operators’ Association (BCWOA) is a group of terminal companies that provides the bulk, break-bulk commodity and intermodal transfer interface among railcars, trucks, barges and large ocean vessels. The 13 association members handle the vast majority of the tonnage moving though the Ports of Vancouver and Squamish in British Columbia. The Associations category is now composed of fifteen Canadian and U.S. associations that represent more than 500 companies in the maritime sector.

6. New Partner Gaz Métro is the largest natural gas distribution company in Quebec, where its network of more than 10,000 kilometres of underground pipelines serves 300 municipalities and more than 190,000 customers. Gaz Métro is also in Vermont, producing electricity and distributing electricity and natural gas to meet the needs of more than 305,000 customers. The company is actively involved in the development of innovative, promising energy projects, such as the production of wind power, the use of natural gas as a transportation fuel, and the development of biomethane.
